The Spudman....I DID IT!

Yesterday was a big deal to me. I'd been training (as well as I could with a busy baby) for four months to compete with my sis Liza in Burley's 25th annual Spudman Olympic Triathlon! 1 mile swim. 24.8 mile bike ride. 6.2 mile run. I had FIVE goals for this race: 1. Don't drown 2. Don't throw up or pee my pants on the run 3. Run most of the 10k. 4. Not be the last finisher in my wave 5. FINISH before 11am (under 4 hours) I accomplished all of them! WOOHOOOO!!!Eric, Blake, and I spent Friday night with my parents so I could get up early the next morning. Well, Blake decided he was done sleeping at 2:30am, so that was that! By 5am Blake was back to bed, but we were ready for breakfast and prep. Mommy french-braided our hair, and I felt like I was six years old again :)
We headed into town at 6:20am and got ready. Liza and I were in Wave 3, so our start time was 7:10am!
There were so many people there!! I think around 2000 athletes were competing this year. I was freaking out just a little bit at this point......And we're off!!!I mostly swam the backstroke, and I will forever be grateful for nose-plugs :)27 min. SWIMLiza and I met up at the swim-to-bike transition, and then she left me in the dust the rest of the race!
I thoroughly enjoyed the bike ride! The weather was perfect, I was feeling strong, the other athletes were so kind and encouraging, and friends and family showed up along the route to cheer us on!! 1:41 BIKE - Yep, it's official. I love biking. I hate running. All along I was most worried about the run, because I have never run more than a 5k. I only hoped to be able to run half of the 10k, but I think I only walked 2 miles of the 6.2! Maybe someday I'll be able to run 10k without stopping.
1:24 RUN - There were little kids with hoses in their front yards along the run route. They'd spray us as we ran by and give us high-5's! It felt so good to accomplish this race, even though I'm kinda' slow :)
Liza finished just over 3 hours....so she had awhile to relax before I crossed the finish line :) I was so happy to see my honey and baby at the end! I actually felt pretty good after the race. Eric said I didn't push hard enough because I wasn't crumpled and puking at the end! Haha...I'll pace myself just to do without the puking.
We went back to my parents' house to nap, watch some Harry Potter, and eat and eat and EAT! I was starving!! I'll admit I'm pretty sore today, but I think this might be something I'll do again in the (distant) future. Our bodies are amazing machines, and it was awesome to be surrounded with such enthusiastic athletes!!
Way to go, sis! We did it!!!!.....shooting for 2013!!

Way to go Beka! I am so proud of you for doing it and not caring about doing it PERFECTLY. My whole family is getting into that kind of thing and I'm always afraid that when we move back to Utah someday I'll have to join in. I'm fit and like exercising, but killing your body over a race doesn't sound fun to me. I love your attitude... no pressure, do your best, have fun, pace yourself, be proud that you did it. Thanks the reminder and the inspiration. Super proud of you!
